A few weeks ago Watson took on “Man Speak”: Understanding what men who are Single, Dating & in Relationships are really saying. I’ve decided to help our male readers out for a change. Women can be confusing. We often say and do two different things. This column focuses on figuring out what Single Women are really saying.
Understanding what single women are really saying:
She Says: I don’t want to ruin our friendship.
She Means: I’m not interested in dating you.
What does this mean for you?: She doesn’t like you and she’s not going to change her mind. Move on. It’s never going to happen.
She Says: I’m happy being single.
She Means: I’m pretending that I’m happy being single but all I really want is a boyfriend.
What does this mean for you?: If you like her, ask her out. See what happens. Providing she didn’t say this in response to you asking her out. If that’s the case, she’s not interested and she’s blowing you off.
She Says: What’s your story?
She Means: Are you single?
What does this mean for you?: Ask her out. She’s interested.
She Says: I’m totally cool with being Friends with Benefits.
She Means: I want to date you and will continue sleeping with you in hopes that you will eventually realize you like me too and we’ll live happily ever after.
What does this mean for you?: This is going to end in a hot mess if you care about her on any level. She is going to get hurt and there will be tears. A girl is never ok with being your friends with benefits. If you’re willing to deal with the eventual mess, go to town.
She Says: I’m not looking to get married right now. I just want someone who I connect with.
She Means: I want to get married and hopefully you’re it.
What does this mean for you?: If she’s over 27, she wants to get married. She’s saying this because she doesn’t want to freak you out.
She Says: Feel like grabbing a drink?
She Means: I am asking you out.
What does this mean for you?: She’s asking you out in the most casual way she knows how. I’m assuming you don’t like her that way or you would have asked her out by now (asking out is the man’s job!) so let her down gently but firmly.
She Says: I didn’t realize you had a girlfriend.
She Means: Well shit.
What does this mean for you?: She’s interested. Are you happy in your relationship because this one likes you.
She Says: I’m still good friends with my ex.
She Means: 1 of two things. 1. I’m still sleeping with my ex or 2. I’m still interested in my ex.
What does this mean for you?: Just because she’s still doing something with her ex doesn’t mean you don’t have a shot. Most women hang on to what they once had until something better comes along. You might be that something better.
She Does: She calls you all the time, makes out with you when she’s drunk and might even have sex with you from time to time but she doesn’t want to date you.
She Means: You are my substitute boyfriend until someone better comes along.
What does this mean for you?: This girls likes you but will never like you. You are her back up boyfriend until the real deal arrives. Cut ties with this one. It’s never going to happen.
She Says: Any of the following things:
- I’m focusing on my career.
- I’m not looking for a relationship right now.
- I just got out of a bad relationship.
- I like being single.
- I have too much on my plate at the moment.
- I’m interested in someone else.
- We make better friends.
- I’m dating someone.
- You’re going to make some girl really happy one day.
- I’m focusing on me right now.
- I’m not good enough for you.
- I have a lot of stuff to work through before I can get into a relationship.
- I’m really busy right now.
- Maybe after I finish with xyz project.
- I’d make a terrible girlfriend.
She Means: I’m just not that into you.
What does this mean for you?: Move on.
